I've wanted to try baking my own bread for a while--I love sourdough bread, and I've grown really tired of supermarket breads, really, but artisan bakeries aren't cheap and I thought it'd be good trying my hand at this for once. When I saw this kit, it looked like it could be very useful to start, considering I had literally no kitchen utensils and other implements at all to make bread. So far, so good! I finally made my first loaf, it wasn't perfect, but I have no doubts that without this kit, it would've been an absolute mess. I found the basket itself especially useful, as scraping the dough of it turned out to be actually quite easy. I wasn't entirely sure how to hold the blade itself, but to be honest, that could just be me being a total newbie at it, too. The one thing that I think is missing here, at least from the perspective of a complete beginner, is a little booklet or even just a sheet with instructions/recipe to 'bake your first bread', so to speak. I assume that if you already know what you're doing, you won't have trouble working with this kit without any instructions, but for a beginner, it'd have been nice to have that extra little push (I had to go find videos and tutorials, which took a bit of time and was a little confusing at first, not knowing what exactly the tools were for, if all of them were indispensable or not, etc.) So I'd say 5* if you know your stuff already, and 4* if you're a confused beginner.

This is a nice set if you’re making sour dough (or any bread really) for the first time. You get most of the basics in this set, but you’ll also need a jar for your sourdough starter and a Dutch oven to bake the dough in - you obviously can’t put the proving bowl in the oven. The proving bowl does make the dough rise evenly, and does absorb a little of the moisture - in fact it can dry the dough out a little too much on the bottom - we put a little oil on the bottom to rectify this. The set comes with useful accessories, but you’ll probably have most of these anyway.

I have started making bread again for the first time in a year or two and decided to try this kit. I was very pleased with the results, my sourdough was excellent if I say so myself, even though it had been a while. This is a very neat kit that includes all you could wish for. The kit includes everything you need and is of a sensible size for a sourdough loaf. The rattan basket is the right shape for proving dough including a cotton cover meaning that you start with the right shape which stays even whilst keeping the dough moist. Additional tools include a silicone brush, a steel cutting blade with a wooden handle (the webpage shows measurements along the edge which mine does not have but I don't think necessary), a large hand spatula and a specific tool for holding razor blades (5 blades included) generally referred to as a scoring lame, that you can use for making patterns in the bread which look great when the bread is baked. You can even score text into the dough. You can use razor blades without the scoring lame, but I like this idea, it is safer. Further, for your safety when not using, there is also a little leather cover that you can put over the blade when on the scoring lame, keeping the rest of the blades in the box. You will need to provide a mixing bowl for the ingredients and any other tools you like to use. All of the above is easy to keep clean and you will love making the bread time after time. There are a few differences within the actual content of the set and the description such as 2 bowls when there is just one, but I still think this is an excellent set. I don't tend to make more than one sourdough loaf at a time. The kit is excellent value, £13.99 at the time of writing.
